Descrption:
In Whitley County, the Eel River Line is an important historical resource,
laid out across the rolling countryside in the late 1860's. The nearest
paved rail trail in Indiana is located in Muncie, some 70 miles away.
In 2006, Whitley County had grown to a population of over 30,000. Many
people in the county are concerned about health and wellness. Local governments,
schools and local businesses such as Parkview Health are working on recreational
projects to promote good health through low cost, safe and environmentally
friendly regular patterns of exercise. Access to the proposed trail would
be made available by a parking lots, one in Columbia City and one in South
Whitley. This planned rail trail will link up with the existing Blue
River Trail in Columbia City to create a trail of just over 13 miles
in total length. An additional mile could be added in South Whitley, giving
Whitko High School direct access to the trail.
