Descrption: The Towpath Trail will follow the former Wabash & Erie Canal route. The canal towpath route was also reused in the early 20th century to carry electric interurban trains. The Wabash in Erie canal once stretched from Toledo to Evansville and was the nations longest.  Use discontinued in 1874 as inland traffic diverted to railroads.

The new trail will provide the connection between the planned 50-mile Aboite Trails system on the west side of Fort Wayne, of which several miles are either open or under construction, and the 26-mile Rivergreenway, which lines the St. Joesph, St. Marys and Maumee Rivers and connects to the town of New Haven on Fort Wayne's east side.  The Towpath will also connect trail users to Eagle Marsh, a 676-acre restored wetlands area.
