Descrption:
In 2001 the City of Bloomington expressed interest in obtaining the 3.1
mile abandoned CSX rail corridor with the intention of constructing a
linear park and trail. The City was earmarked to receive Federal Highway
Administration funds totaling $5.4 million through the Indiana Department
of Transportation for acquisition of the corridor and construction of
the first phase of the trail in 2004.
At their August 3, 2005 meeting, the Bloomington City Council unanimously
approved a resolution supporting a City plan to use grant funds to buy
the old CSX corridor plus two parcels of property near Grimes Lane. In
December 2005, years of negotiations with CSX officials ended with the
City's purchase of the 3.1 mile corridor for $3.225 million. CSX has a
long history of exaggerating land prices to support their unusual real-estate
division.
Design work on Phase I of what will be called the B-Line Trail, a .61-mile
segment from Second Street to just west of Rogers Street, is ongoing and
City officials have tentatively planned a public presentation of the trail
design by July 2006.
The B-Line Trail Master Plan outlined five potential phases of development
for the trail:
Ninth Street/Crestmont Park District - Adams St. to Fairview St. Near
West Side District - Fairview St. to Rogers St.
Downtown District - Rogers St. to Second St.
Seminary Square District - Second St. to Grimes Ln.
McDoel Switchyard District - Grimes Ln. to County Club Dr.
