Descrption:
Goshen area: runs along Rock Run Creek and Abshire Park. Part of
the Maple City Greenway (see map below). Ski rental in winter from Abshire
Cabin. The section north of Lincoln Ave. trail traverses the gently rolling
farmland and fields of northern Indiana. Tall, leaning trees form a pleasant,
shady canopy over the path and make this one of the best rural rail-trails
in the state.
Middlebury: Crosses the Little Elkhart River and connects to Krider
Gardens.
Future Plans: The
Pumpkinvine will become 2 trails, connected by county roads. The trail
between Middlebury and Shipshewana will be about 11 miles total, with
construction around 2009. Another 3 miles will also eventually be added
to the current open trail in the Goshen area.
The Maple City Greenway of Goshen consists of several bike/walking paths
throughout the city, all very well signed and maintained. See a map of
the Maple City Greenway below. Many sidewalks have been attractively widened
with brick to suit both bikers and pedestrians. A loop can be made by
using the Mill Race Trail on the west side, neighborhood streets on the
south side, the Winona Railway Trail and City Center Trail on the east
side, and Clinton Street on the north side. The Pumpkinvine Trail spokes
off toward the northeast to Abshire Park and continues through scenic
rolling farmland, eventually connecting Middlebury and Shipshewana. Despite
high traffic and surrounding sprawl, downtown Goshen is very walkable
and rich with shops and historic buildings.
