Status: Open
Counties: Madison
Endpoints: Falls Park, Pendleton Ave., plus various tangent trails
Towns: Pendleton
Activities: Walking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing
Surface: Grass, dirt, limestone
Length: Rail-trail section is about 1 mile; other tangent trails in and around Falls Park comprise several miles
Description: The rail-trail portion, built on a former interurban line, begins just south of Falls Park as a grassy strip, continues to old bridge abutment, passes Pendleton Museum of History, crosses footbridge over Fall Creek, continues northward along Prairie Creek as a dirt path, then widens into a 10' limestone path to a trailhead off Pendleton Ave. Several miles of scenic nature trails traverse Falls Park, a 150-acre public area. One could spend an entire day exploring this fine trail system. Falls Park is an excellent place to take the kids.
This trail may become a part of the Interurban Trail network, which proposes to connect Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis with Mounds State Park in Anderson with a series of multi-use paths. This plan has been adopted by the Madison County Council of Governments (MCCOG) and Marion County MPO. Contact MCCOG for more information.
