Terre
Haute

The original NRHT has been an established project by the West Central
Indiana Economic District, Inc. in Terre Haute for a number of
years. It was this trail that inspired the name and theme of the
cross-state project.

Open
Trail
There are 6 miles of the trail open in Terre Haute, from Cherry Street and the
ISU campus downtown to the eastern city limits at Twigg Rest Area. Most
of this trail follows the former Terre Haute, Brazil & Eastern (also
Vandalia or Pennsy) rail corridor. Connected to this trail
is the the
Indiana Interpretative Trail, a unique one-mile trail loop around the
Indiana State University stadium in the shape of the state of Indiana.
Future
Plans
The
trail will be extended westward to the Wabash River. A potential 7-mile separated path trail route from the Wabash River to the Illinois State Line
was researched and highlighted by a civil engineering student design
team at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Eastward from
the Twigg rest Area, there are
plans to continue the trail another 0.5 miles to Chamberlain Road.
