Greencastle / Putnam CountyThe National Road Heritage Trail has been endorsed by the not-for-profit People Pathways, the Putnam County Commissioners, Greencastle Board of Park Commissioners, Greencastle Common Council (city council), and the Fillmore Town Council. Because the trail corridor here is considerably north of the National Road, the local trail is being developed as People Pathways and the Vandalia Trail. Most of the Putnam County portion will have a parallel horseback riding path. Open Trail People Pathways has developed 4 miles of asphalt and packed stone trail along this corridor from the east side of Greencastle to the town of Fillmore and a 1.25-mile packed stone trail segment east of Fillmore. The trail follows the former Pennsy/Vandalia rail corridor. Future Plans People
Pathways and the Hendricks County group, Friends of the Vandalia Trail,
are currently collaborating on developing the final 4.1 miles of packed
stone trail between the towns of Coatesville and Fillmore to complete
the 12-mile Amo to Greencastle Vandalia Trail. In addition, People
Pathways has been instrumental in the city of Greencastle obtaining a
TE grant to extend the trail 3 miles southwest across the city,
connecting to DePauw University by way of the Campus Link Trail.
NRHT, Inc is studying further extension southwest from Greencastle to
rejoin the National Road by way of the scenic Big Walnut Creek
area. Features on or near the Trail Greencastle - People Pathways web site
