Greencastle / Putnam County

The National Road Heritage Trail has been endorsed by People Pathways, the nonprofit group supporting trails throughout Greencastle, and by the Putnam County Commissioners. Because the trail corridor here will be considerably north of the National Road, the name locally has been proposed as the Vandalia Trail where it does not already exist as the People Pathways.  Most of the Putnam County portion will have a parallel horseback riding path.

Open Trail

The nonprofit group People Pathways has developed 4 miles of asphalt
and limestone trail along this corridor from the east side of Greencastle to the town of Fillmore.  The trail follows the Pennsy/Vandalia rail corridor, both on the railbed and just south of it.

Future Plans

People Pathways has plans for future expansion to give access to the southwest portion of Greencastle by way of the planned Campus Link Trail.  NRHT, Inc is studying ways to route the trail to the southwest to rejoin the National Road by way of the scenic Big Walnut Creek area, with initial local contacts made in the Reelsville and Limedale areas. Additional local help is needed to complete this route study.
