Descrption: The
Historic Mill Race Trail is designed and funded. It has the value
of being downtown and on a beautiful part of the Eel River, but it also
has several challenges. The Eel River along that section is noisy and
fast, and the high banks separate the river environment from downtown,
reducing traffic noise. Some of the bank is very narrow and steep, requiring
expensive boardwalks. Much of the bank is wide and grassy. The trail will
run very close to the water as close as LTW's trail is when it passes
under the Third Street Bridge. Ideally the trail would pass under all
four bridges (6th, 3rd, Market, and railroad). These underpasses, though
expensive, would make the trail much more successful than a trail with
street crossings.
Unlike a trail such as River Bluff, a downtown trail such as Mill Race
will have many connections to the sidewalk system, so users can access
downtown businesses, services, and parking. In addition, the Mill Race
route is rich in local history, passing by Small's Bakery (Boondocker's),
the retaining wall (at least some of which was built in 1879), Bankers'
Row (on the National Historic Register), footings for dams that provided
hydro-power for factories in Logansport's early days, the stone support
for the aqueduct for the Wabash and Erie Canal's Fifth Street crossing
over the Eel River, the Columbia Brewery building, and close by the Tipton
Lodge. The trail would also go over two new foot bridges over the mill
race (left from hydro-power days) behind Bankers' Row.
Future Plans: An
extension to the trail in progress will acquire and develop 1.2 miles
of trail along the Wabash River. Future connections to the
Historic Mill Race Trail and the
Eel River Bluff Trail are planned.
