Descrption:
Riverside Trail
This beautiful 3-mile asphalt trail runs along the St. Joseph River, past
several parks and canoe launches. An historic iron-truss bridge
crosses the river at the north end of the trail, at Darden Road. The
path continues east along Darden for another mile.
East Bank Trail
This 1-mile asphalt trail runs between the south edge of the downtown
area, where it is connected to the Riverwalk Trail, and goes northward
to Angela Boulevard. From there, one can proceed north using informal
dirt and sidewalk paths to the campuses of Holy Cross, St. Marys, and
Notre Dame. Also from the north end of this trail, one can
turn west and get to the south end of the Riverside Trail, about 0.5 mile
away. There is sidewalk along Angela, or a number of neighborhood
streets to use. See the map below.
Riverwalk/Northside Trail
This concrete trail runs primarily along the east bank of the St Joseph
River, although there is also a stretch of trail/boardwalk on the west
bank. A former railroad bridge connects the two sections, between
Howard Park and downtown area. The path stretches between the south
end of the East Bank Trail at the mouth of the East Race, southward to
the IU-South Bend campus and Mishawaka city limits at Ironwood Drive.
The Riverwalk sections are bikeable but can be rough like sidewalk in
places. Some portions are susceptible to flooding. The
dam, race and pumping station are an interesting stop, located at the
north end of the Riverwalk section, just north of downtown South Bend.
