Surface:Asphalt Length:11 miles proposed (1.3 miles open) Descrption:The C&O Greenway, once completed, will represent one of the main spine trails in the NW Indiana region. The proposed rail-to-trail will follow the abandoned C&O corridor from Griffith east to Winfield at the Lake/Porter County Line. Along the 11-mile route, the trail will travel through Merrillville and Hobart as well. As of January 2012, the Town of Merrillville has constructed a 1.3 mile segment from just east of Taft St. to Broadway. The town has received additional federal monies to extend the trail another 2 miles east, under I-65 to Mississippi Street, at the entrance to the Southlake Mall commercial area. Plans are for the trail to circumvent this heavily automobile-friendly area, but also provide safe connections for non-motorized users into the heart of the mall. The proposed west terminus of the C&O Greenway will connect to both the Erie-Lackawanna and Oak Savannah Trails, providing one of the most significant off-road trail hubs in the state. At the center of this hub is the substantial Oak Ridge Prairie County Park, which currently serves as the western terminus for the Oak Savannah. The Town of Griffith and the Lake County Parks Department are currently in negotiations to use a portion of the C&O right-of-way as a long-awaited connector between the Oak Savannah and Erie-Lackawanna Trails. Manager:Merrillville Parks & Recreation Future Plans:Future connections are planned to the Oak Savannah Trail and Erie-Lackawanna Trail.
