Descrption: Beautiful,
natural, canopied trail. Even a short walk on the trail will be worth
your time. Consider taking the full trip, though, for the impressive views
from the elevated railbed leading up to the trestle 30' above Crittenden
Creek. A separated, fully shaded horse trail runs parallel to the main
path far off to one side. The first 0.25 miles of the trail in Amo is
an open-aired, well-manicured, park-like setting. It's important to note
that this is still a rustic trail. There are no public restrooms, water,
or electricity, though you can find much of what you need if you shop
at Amo General Store or eat at Amo Pizza across Pearl Street from the
Interurban Depot.
Future Plans: The
Vandalia Trail is a future
section of the cross-state National
Road Heritage Trail. Subsequent phases will connect westward
to Fillmore and Greencastle. The
trail also received a grant in 2008 for eastward acquisition toward Clayton,
Cartersburg and Plainfield.
