Descrption: A
cross-country, multi-use trail stretching over 6800 miles through 15 states
between Delaware and California is the grand vision of the American
Discovery Trail (ADT). While the trail is currently open and usable,
most of the route through Indiana and other states follows roadways due
to the lack of suitable non-motorized, off-road trails. In Indiana, the
route splits into a southern tier and a northern tier. The northern tier,
which goes to Chicago, has the chance to become a nearly contiguous series
of rail-trails. A group of trail enthusiasts, with assistance from the
state trails plan, is planning a new route for the trail for the northern
tier, inspired by upcoming chances to bring the route off roadways and
onto current and future trails, as well as to connect more points of interest
and population centers.
The route proposed would be primarily a rail-trail route, picking up the
railbanked Erie line between Monterey and North Judson,
then following an active railroad into Porter County, eventually meeting
with the Veterans Memorial Trail in Hebron,
which will lead to Crown Point and the Pennsy
Greenway. The Pennsy Greenway project will cross the state line into
Illinois, where it is already a paved rail-trail.
Manager:
Various. The trail will probably be managed by the individual localities
through which it will pass.
Future Plans: The trail is in need of a multi-county active group to support it.
